My first big game hunt.
By Haley Pollock

I was planning on going on my first sheep hunt in August when I got a phone call friend Mark and he told me that we were going on a sheep hunt that weekend, you will never see me that excited again. I was jumping up and down with excitement and telling all my friends and family. On Saturday we went to Mark's house and so ded everybody else that was going on the hunt. You're probably wondering was there any other kid hunters. Yes there was another girl named Hailey she is 8 years old and a girl named Shay (Shaylyn) she is 7 years old, and myself, I'm 9 years old. That night Hailey and Shay slept over at my house but the bad thing was we didn't get home until about 12:00 am, and we had a sheep hunt the next day. That morning I woke myself up just thinking about the sheep hunt. Then my dad came in and woke us up even though I was already awake, but the girls weren't.

Finally we got in the truck and started to head to Redmond. We were all starving so we stopped at Burger King as soon as we entered Nephi. We tried to hurry because we were about 30 minutes late. We got back in the truck and we were on our way. Everybody in the truck just kept talking and talking, Hailey and I started to get tired so we took a nap. We got to Lyman Anderson's house and they wanted to show us the animals. I thought they were just going to be regular farm animals, they weren't. It was all sheep, every kind that I could think of. It started to give me butterflies.

We headed up the mountain it took us about 30 minutes to get where we needed to be. My dad and I stayed in the truck got out the binoculars and looked at all the mountains. We started to get out and Mark runs up to me and says "Your sheep is right around the corner." I jumped out, grabbed my gun, and grabbed my mom, dad, Tina, and John (the camera man). We headed up the mountain while the rest of the people were back at the trucks. We hiked around the hill when we saw my sheep on the road eating. I got in position fired and missed, I fired again and missed again, and then I fired and heard the sound that every hunter likes to hear, I hit it.

It started to jump that's when I new it wasn't going anywhere. It started to walk away then it stopped and I took the shot. I hit it! It turned around went by a bush and layed down. We waited a couple of minutes but it didn't get back up. So we hiked up the mountain across from us so I could get a better shot. I got up by a tree, got in position and got my scope on the sheep. At that moment I knew it was suffering I shot and hit. I was yelling and screaming I was so excited and my parents were to. We got on the road where I could see it, I ran up to it and the first thing I said was "My first big game." I held up my hand and said "Yes!"

Everybody at the truck ran over I tried to hold my sheep's head up but the ram was so big I couldn't even lift it. Everybody was giving me high fives and hugs, I was so excited. I said let's go shoot the other two sheep! The rest of the day went great and Shaylyn and Hailey both got there sheep too.

I want to thank Lyman Anderson and Homestead Ranches for the hard work, Mark Robison for taking me and giving me the opportunity to shoot my first sheep, Jon Montgomery and Trail of the Sportsman for filming my hunt so I can enjoy it forever. Thank you. This will be my best hunt and moment forever.
