Default Kentucky extends elk hunting into Public Areas

It seems that the Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Commission decided to allow hunting in Wildlife Management Areas and the Daniel Boone National Forest. I don't know, I would think if it's a national forest or management area, those animals should be left alone. It's one thing to hunt in the wild, but not on protected land.

I agree, the protected land should be left alone but maybe there is a population problem and thats the reason for allowing the hunts?

??

I don't know of a national forest in this part of the country that doesn't allow hunting. As for wildlife management areas, that's why they're set up. Funds from the Pittman-Robertson excise tax that hunters pay make up 80% of the budget for WMAs. Hunters pay for them, hunters hunt them.

Why shouldn't hunting be allowed on them?

put a male and a female rabbit in a box and what do you get..... a box full of rabbits.overpopulation leads to inbreeding overgrazing and an abundance of problems.back in the old days this problem was handled by preditors and indians and we all know what happened to them.

Hunting keeps everything in balance. The muledeer hunters think there are too many Elk in Colorado putting pressure on the Muledeer population. I think too many Elk can be a bad thing. I love Elk hunting but I also love to see healthy Mule Deer in the wild. Your Kentucky Elk will be likely to put similar pressure on whitetails. May as well enjoy and hunt the Elk.

Ky is limiting its elk herd to the eastern portion of the state, thats where the habitat can support them the best, i.e. reclaimed strip mines. There are only a limited number of counties in which they want to sustain the herd. Those counties can only be hunted if you are drawn in the lottery. In the "out of zone" counties any legal deer hunter who purchased a lottery elk drawn "tag" and did not get drawn can legally harvest an elk if gets out of the "buffer zone." Some of those elk are drifting into Daniel Boone National Forest which by the way is home to some of the KDFWR's Wildlife Management Area's.
